Covington constructed new headworks for the City of Gulfport’s North WWTP that incorporated advanced technologies, such as mechanical bar screens, grit concentrators, and dewatering units. Rated for a peak flow of 90 million gallons per day (MGD), these improvements enhance efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and increase system reliability. Careful coordination with the City aligned grant opportunities and financial obligations through strategic bidding for a cost-effective and constructible project. Responsibilities included site preparation, excavation and grading, construction of heavy concrete structures, pump and equipment installation, and full electrical integration. The team’s close collaboration among multiple engineering disciplines—geotechnical, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation—and specialized equipment manufacturers delivered a successful project on time and on budget.
Also at the North WWTP, Covington rehabilitated the existing effluent trickle filtration to a modern cloth media system designed to handle higher hydraulic loads and provide dependable service for years to come. The project addressed the City’s capacity and maintenance challenges and prepared the WWTP to reliably meet demand, even during extreme peak flows and future development. Responsibilities included removing the existing concrete facility components, modifying structural conditions, and repurposing facilities for the installation of the new cloth media filtration and backwash system while also ensuring proper electrical integration.
