Thank you to everyone who joined us at #GulfCon for Heath Hansell’s presentation on the ongoing restoration, expansion, and protection efforts at the Round Island complex in the Mississippi Sound.
Heath shared insight into the evolution of New Round Island, a landmark beneficial use project originally constructed in 2016 to support marsh habitat creation through the placement of dredged material. Since then, continued monitoring, adaptive management, and restoration planning have helped guide the long-term vision for this important coastal habitat.
The proposed Round Island Expansion Project represents the next step in protecting and strengthening this coastal resource, with plans to restore and create more than 250 acres of coastal island habitat, including beach and dune systems, maritime forests, and interior swale pond.
We appreciate the opportunity to be part of meaningful conversations around coastal restoration, habitat creation, and beneficial use practices that support the future of Mississippi’s shoreline.
